The World Bank Avoids Asbestos in New Construction
&Warns of Hazards of Installed Asbestos !
The World Bank has issued a Good Practice Note, Asbestos: Occupational and
Community Health Issues. The note outlines the health risks related to exposure
to asbestos, lists resources on international good practices to minimize these
risks, and describes some of the available alternatives to asbestos-containing
products.
The note advises that it is good practice to minimize the health risks
associated with asbestos products by avoiding their use in new construction and
renovation and, if installed asbestos-containing materials are encountered, by
using internationally recognized standards and best practices to deal with
them.
It notes that the Bank expects borrowers and other clients to use alternative
materials whenever feasible.
